Bernard Gantmacher, founder of the brand, was inspired time and time again by students of the elite Yale University before starting his company. Their casual-sporty lifestyle and team clothing influenced his early creations, and today this is successfully reflected in the current women's and men's collections.
Swedish-American label Gant’s success story began with a shirt in 1940s New Haven. Bernard Gantmacher had first sewn collars in a garment factory in New York City and later founded his own company, producing shirts for well-known brands. He began his shirts with an embroidered G inside a diamond, and this would become the emblem of the lifestyle brand, which can still be found on many of its glasses frames today. It didn’t take long before Gant became a shirt manufacturer with a first-class reputation. Finally, in 1949 Gantmacher‘s sons, who had joined the family business, founded their own label - Gant of New Haven - and celebrated huge success with the Gant Shirt. In the following decades, a proud casual and sportswear label developed from the former men's shirt collection, as well as a fashion line producing, amongst other things, home accessories, watches, perfumes and, of course, glasses. Today there are over 300 Gant stores in more than 70 countries, to continue the success story.
