Despite being a listed company, Bvlgari is a true family business. The company was founded in 1884 and, with a small modification to the family name, was named after its founder, Greek goldsmith and jeweller Voulgaris. The first Bvlgari shop was opened in 1905 in Milan, and sold jewellery produced by its founder. Today, this shop is Bvlgari’s flagship store.
After the founder’s death, Bvlgari was taken over by his son, who moved the company’s focus away from jewellery and onto gemstones. Both are still flagship products for the company today. An extension to the product range in the 70s enabled the firm to expand internationally. The brand’s luxury products can be purchased worldwide in exclusive Bvlgari stores.
Today Bvlgari is a modern limited company, managed by the original founder’s descendants. Worldwide, the company has 200 stores selling jewellery as well as watches, neckties, eyewear, fragrances and fashion accessories. Bvlgari also operates its own exclusive hotel chain, and runs a bar, confectionery, restaurant and café in its Tokyo store.
